பயங்கரவாதி மகிந்த

திருகோணமலையில் இம்மாதம் நான்காம் திகதி கொல்லப்பட்ட 17 பிரான்ஸ் தொண்டு அமைப்பின் உறுப்பினர்களின் கொலையை சிறிலங்கா படைகளே செய்துள்ளதாக போர்நிறுத்த கண்காணிப்புக்குழுவும் இன்று அறிக்கை வெளியிட்டிருக்கிறது. French charity Action Against Hunger என்ற அமைப்பின் தொண்டர்களே வரிசையாக முழங்காலில் நிற்கவைத்து அவர்களது அலுவலகத்துக்குள்ளே வைத்து சுட்டுக் கொல்லப்பட்டார்கள்.
சிங்கள இராணுவத்தினரின் இக்கொலையை போர்நிறுத்த கண்காணிப்புக்குழு உடனேயே வெளிச்சத்திற்கு கொண்டு வந்திருந்தால் சர்வதேச சமூகம் உண்மை நிலையை விளங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்திருக்கும். இன்றும் தொடர்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் மனித அவலங்களுக்கு இதே கண்காணிப்புக்குழுவும் ஏதோ ஒரு விதத்தில் உள்ளடங்குகிறார்கள் என்பது கவலையளிக்கின்ற விடயமாகும்.
இத் தொண்டு அமைப்புக்களின் உறுப்பினர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்ட பின்னர் நடைபெற்ற செஞ்சோலை படுகொலையும் உரியமுறையில் இந்த போர்நிறுத்த கண்காணிப்புக்குழுவால் வெளிப்படுத்தப்படவில்லை. இன்னும் சில காலம் சென்ற பின்னர், செஞ்கோலை படுகொலையின் உண்மைநிலையை (இவர்கள்) வெளிப்படுத்துவதால் என்ன நடந்துவிடப்போகிறது?
எப்படி இருந்தபோதும் தற்போது என்றாலும் சிங்கள அரசின் தொண்டர் அமைப்புக்களின் உறுப்பினர்களை கொன்றதை சர்வதேசத்துக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தியது மட்டுமல்லாமல் கடந்த காலங்களில் வன்னி மண்ணில் நடந்த கிளைமோர் தாக்குதல்களையும் வெளிப்படையாக கண்டித்திருப்பதுடன் சிங்கள அரசு மீது குற்றம் சாட்டியுள்ளமை ஆறுதல் அடையகூடியதாக இருக்கிறது.
இவ்வாரம் இந்தியன் ருடே சஞ்சிகைக்கு பேட்டி அளித்த மகிந்த ராஜபக்சவிடம் செஞ்கோலை படுகொலை தொடர்பாக கேட்கப்பட்டபோது “கொல்லப்பட்டவர்கள் சேட்டும் ரவுசரும் அணிந்திருந்ததாகவும் அதனாலேயே கொல்லப்பட்டார்கள் எனவும் அவ்வாறான உடைகளை தமிழ்ப் பெண்கள் அணிவதில்லை எனவும் அதனால் அவர்கள் போராளிகள் எனவும் அதற்கு ஒரு விளக்கமும் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்.
கொல்லப்பட்டவர்களின் சடலங்களை பார்த்தால் மகிந்த எவ்வளவு பொய்யன் என்பதை புரிந்து கொள்ளமுடியும். ஒருவன் அணிந்திருக்கும் உடைகளை பற்றி கூறி அதன் மூலம் ஒரு படுகொலையை நியாயப்படுத்துகின்ற உலகின் முதலாவது பயங்கரவாதி மகிந்த ராஜபக்சவாகவே இருக்கமுடியும்.

Q. During the election campaign, you had said you were against Norwegian mediation and that when you come to power they would be out. Is that still your approach.
A. I never said I was going to chase them out. We have our alliances-some of them felt they should go. After the elections, our allies agreed that they should still try and negotiate. My alliance partners gave me the mandate to go ahead with the peace talks, so we went ahead. The LTTE broke away from the peace talks because we didn`t provide a helicopter to fly them across. Can you imagine this'
Q. The feeling is that the All Party Conference is just a delaying tactic.
A. Why should I do that if this is not a process I believe in' My political strategy is transparent and I have no hidden agenda. I told them that I want concrete proposals within a clear timeframe. But what time has the LTTE given me' Ever since I was sworn in, they have replied to our peace initiative with bombs, terror and assassinations. I didn`t retaliate. I was just watching the situation, trying to say we must negotiate. Only after they hit Colombo and struck my army commander, did I react.
Q. You are perceived to be a hawk.
A. The West looked at me like that because they thought I came from a rural background. I was not glamourous enough for them. They wanted an Oxford graduate, fluent in English and one who spoke with an accent and all that. They thought a man wearing a tie would make a better leader.
Now, the whole world must understand that when the LTTE attacked initially, I showed great patience and restraint. Otherwise, I would have started (retaliating) from the time I came to power and used any excuse to walk in with all my firepower. Whatever the image they may try to build, I am still Mahinda Rajapakse who knows what the people want and their needs. What I want is peace and prosperity.
Q. Is Sri Lanka on the brink of a civil war'
A. No. Because, as I said earlier, I want peace. I don`t want war. Like India and so many other countries, our choice is to address such problems through negotiation and accommodation, not through heavy-handed repression. That`s why, whatever actions I have taken have not been in a fully offensive mode. But we will not sit idle in the face of terrorism. We will not bow down to pressure.
Q. Are you walking into a trap laid by Prabhakaran'
A. You never know how Prabhakaran`s mind works. Today, the world has recognised that the LTTE is a terrorist organisation. Apart from India, the EU has banned it and so have the Americans and the Canadians. The Australians are to follow soon. In his Independence Day speech, the President of India (A.P.J. Abdul Kalam) spoke of the need for uniting against terror-we have to forget all differences and do that. Not only for Sri Lanka, but also for India and the rest of the world. There must be international pressure-there cannot be three different approaches for one word which is terrorism.
Q. But what about the incident in which children of an orphanage were reportedly killed in an attack carried out by your army recently.
A. Instead of listening to propaganda and rumours, people must study the facts. Everybody knows it was a training camp for child soldiers and women cadres opened by the LTTE. Photographs showed the bodies were clad in black trousers, shirts and headbands. In Sri Lanka, most Hindu and Tamil girls never wear clothes like that. We had identified the camp in the jungle in 2004. We had to take action when attacked. I will never order an attack on an orphanage or on children. It was sad. We are family people. I have given clear instructions to the forces that there should not be any human rights violations.
Army Chief, Govt. attack SLMM head from Daily Mirror
Army Commander Sarath Fonseka yesterday hit out at the SLMM head Ulf Henricsson for charging that the security forces were responsible for the killing of 17 aid workers in Mutur earlier this month.
“He has no business to say that. We will need to have a chat with him,” Lieut. Gen. Fonseka told the Daily Mirror.
The Army Commander also claimed the only reason the military initially prevented anyone from visiting the area at the time was because of the LTTE presence in the vicinity. Meanwhile Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera, who is currently in London, said the SLMM made its conclusions even before the police probe and forensic examinations were completed.
“I am not calling him (Henricsson) a liar but I am calling it a very irresponsible statement,” he told the BBC.
When asked if the government had faith in the truce monitors, Mr. Samaraweera said just because the singer was out of tune it did not necessarily mean the song was bad.
“We believe the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission has a very important role to play in Sri Lanka especially at a time when the LTTE has escalated its level of violence. This is the time for the SLMM to play a more independent and non-partisan role,” Minister Samaraweera said.
